Jan Bear
Biography
Jan is a retired Orthopaedic surgeon born in 1955 who grew up in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He is married to Kim and has two daughters Samantha and JJ. Jan has been involved in sports since junior high school but over the last 30 years has become interested in endurance sports. This began with several marathons while in medical school and residency then on to multisport events and ultra-endurance races. He then began competing in adventure races. He enjoys training with his wife also an adventure racer and ultra-endurance athlete. Some of his recent accomplishments include; the only consecutive three time Leadville Trail 100 bike and run finisher, with one of these combination of races being completed with Kim and another with his brother Todd. In 1999 he completed both 100 mile Leadville races in the top level under 9 hours on the bike and under 25 hours in the run, he has also earned the coveted 1000 mile belt buckle and has 15 finishes of the Leadville Trail 100 Mountain Bike Race. He is also in the Leadman family finishing all five Leadville Races in a single summer(50 and 100 mile mountain bike races 6, 26 and 100 mile runs). Other accomplishments include a 10th place finish in the Solo division of the 2000 24 Hours of Moab Mountain Bike Race, twenty top 10 age group finishes in the Mt. Taylor Winter Quadrathon, 3rd place in age group at La Ruta de Los Conquistadores the toughest mountain bike race on the planet in Costa Rica in 2000. Other races include the Trans Alps, Cape Epic, Breck Epic and Trans Portugal. As a founding member of Team Santa Fe he has also competed in several adventure races in the last several years. Most races are completed with his wife Kim also an avid racer and member of Team Santa Fe. Over the years Jan has competed in Adventure Racing World Championships in Switzerland, Newfoundland and Scotland, The Beast of the East X2, Primal Quest X2, Eco Challenge Canadian Championships, Eco Challenge X2, Balance Bar 24 X4, AdventureXstream X20, and numerous other events. He has retired from the practice of orthopaedic surgery in Santa Fe after 27 years. His 2018 adventure was completing the Tour Divide in 24 days. He now has his daughters married and both they and their husbands also compete in numerous sports events.

Oracle, AZ • Feb 17-18 2024We had a great team, Aileen E, Randy F, David J, David M and myself. We were faster than last year but still came up just a few minutes short ending up in second place 13 minutes off the top step of the podium after 21 laps and 336 miles of racing. Overall I personally was a little slower by about 2 minutes over the four laps but had to walk one of the bitches on my lap #4 due to a racer injury at the bottom of the hill so the organizers and medical staff made all the racers walk that 3-400 yard section, without that issue I think my times would have been the same as last year, this includes two night laps.

All my tools bounced out of my top tube bag after I forgot to latch it after stopping to take a anti-cramp pill. Due to the heat I had some wicked thigh adductor cramps so I decided to stop after 7 laps and risk my place but it worked out in the end.

We quit after Kim fell and hurt her ankle about midnight, she finished her lap but could not continue. The rules state that each rider needs to be with in 2 laps of the other team member. At that point I had 7 laps and Kim 6, so I could have done one more but that would be all I could do as our total would be 8 for me and 6 for Kim. Better luck next year.

The race is fast and we generally finish 4th or 5th because of our age but the added single track running and mountain biking this year really helped and we finished 2nd out of 24 Co-Ed pairs and the 6th team over-all to cross the finish line.
